Gardening Tips

The latest treatments for dealing with white ants (Mastotermes darwinensis) is the province of a registered pest exterminator. However there are some alternative methods that can be used to control white ants.

Kitchen scraps are better dumped in the garden, and preferably under the mulch or a light covering of soil. If all kitchen waste matter that is usually thrown out in your wheely bin was recycled through your garden, it could be that enough was being spread about to save entirely on having to buy chemical fertilisers. But remember that those compost tumblers are great breeding places for cockroaches in the contents are not kept damp and turned regularly.

There is no such thing as a maintenance free garden. If you think there is you have either got a back yard full of weeds or concrete. This would be the result of no care and maintenance gardening.

Because there is usually very little moisture under a sealed road and because there is also a "stale" environment, the tree begins to starve for water and nourishment, and will soon perish.

Dry patches in lawns can be the result of one of several factors. Incorrect irrigation layout, soldier grubs chewing on the root systems of the grass or some sort of chemical deposit in the lawn soil. Even up the throwing distance of lawn sprinklers so that they are all spraying to give 100% cover to the lawn. Apply Carbaryl to grub infestations. and dig out contaminated soil and insert fresh soil. Apply Gypsum to new soil.

Remember not to disturb White Ants once you sight them in a tree. Too much noise or light will see them depart before your can dowse them in poison.

When planning your garden and you are trying to decide on what plants go where, be sure not to confuse your open woodland tree species with monsoon rainforest varieties. They require different watering regimes, fertiliser and mulching. One specific example is Red River gums (Euc. carmulendensis)... it just does not seem to handle over watering, when located in a heavy watering program which is what palms and rainforest type plantings need.

One such alternative is to plant a tree that has the ability to take up white ants where they can live relatively undisturbed, and leave other plants and trees alone. One of the best trees for this is the Gmelina arborea, which is a perfect host for the white ant because of the softwood nature of the tree. Plus it has a quick growing habit and the apparent inability of the white ant to kill the tree. All rural dwellers should consider planting at least three or four of these trees in strategic places around their block. This method should appeal to people who are environmentally friendly and want to avoid the use of pesticides.

Native plants do not need watering. Bull Shit!

As a plant gets older, it doesn't need to be watered. Bull shit! (Except if it dips its roots into the water table, and there is underlying moisture or there is a leaking water line).

Rural residents should try to spare their driveway from being watered by irrigation overreach to avoid potholes in the drive.

When raking leaves try and move them towards a garden bed. They are valuable mulch and build up the organic structure of your soil. Definitely don't burn them.

Putting weed mat down to beat weeds in garden beds will not work out in the long run. If mulch is applied weed seeds still invade and grow. If gravel mulch is applied then after some months of irrigation the sand and finer particles will have gravitated to the bottom of the rock mulch and this will allow weeds to grow. Or the root systems of shrubs and trees can easily penetrate the weed-mat from below and then the matting becomes as one: a combined mass of roots, mulch and mat. Also, it is nigh on impossible to dig in new plants at a later stage.

Epsom Salts is useful to make citrus flower and fruit. Epsom Salts is Magnesium sulphate. Plants are only able to take up as nutrition a sulphate, a nitrate, or carbonate.

When storing leftover fertiliser, it is better if it is stored in a plastic rubbish bin. All chemical fertilisers are acidic and or corrosive and can damage steel (your garden shed), and even concrete, whilst organic fertilisers emit gases that are corrosive.

Bismarkia noblis, Wodyetia bifurcata (Foxtail Palm) and Borassus flabellifer (ToddyPalm) uniquely have tap root systems. They are capable of seeking out underlying moisture and after doing so appear to survive without watering.
